Abasa

عَبَسَ وَتَوَلَّىٰٓ

Transliteration: AAabasa watawalla

The Prophet frowned and turned away

أَن جَآءَهُ ٱلْأَعْمَىٰ

Transliteration: An jaahu alaAAma

Because there came to him the blind man, [interrupting]

وَمَا يُدْرِيكَ لَعَلَّهُۥ يَزَّكَّىٰٓ

Transliteration: Wama yudreeka laAAallahu yazzakka

But what would make you perceive, [O Muhammad], that perhaps he might be purified

أَوْ يَذَّكَّرُ فَتَنفَعَهُ ٱلذِّكْرَىٰٓ

Transliteration: Aw yaththakkaru fatanfaAAahu alththikra

Or be reminded and the remembrance would benefit him

أَمَّا مَنِ ٱسْتَغْنَىٰ

Transliteration: Amma mani istaghna

As for he who thinks himself without need

فَأَنتَ لَهُۥ تَصَدَّىٰ

Transliteration: Faanta lahu tasadda

To him you give attention

وَمَا عَلَيْكَ أَلَّا يَزَّكَّىٰ

Transliteration: Wama AAalayka alla yazzakka

And not upon you [is any blame] if he will not be purified

وَأَمَّا مَن جَآءَكَ يَسْعَىٰ

Transliteration: Waamma man jaaka yasAAa

But as for he who came to you striving [for knowledge]

وَهُوَ يَخْشَىٰ

Transliteration: Wahuwa yakhsha

While he fears [Allah]

فَأَنتَ عَنْهُ تَلَهَّىٰ

Transliteration: Faanta AAanhu talahha

From him you are distracted

كَلَّآ إِنَّهَا تَذْكِرَةٌ

Transliteration: Kalla innaha tathkiratun

No! Indeed, these verses are a reminder

فَمَن شَآءَ ذَكَرَهُۥ

Transliteration: Faman shaa thakarahu

So whoever wills may remember it

فِى صُحُفٍ مُّكَرَّمَةٍ

Transliteration: Fee suhufin mukarramatin

[It is recorded] in honored sheets

مَّرْفُوعَةٍ مُّطَهَّرَةٍۭ

Transliteration: MarfooAAatin mutahharatin

Exalted and purified

بِأَيْدِى سَفَرَةٍ

Transliteration: Biaydee safaratin

[Carried] by the hands of messenger-angels

كِرَامٍۭ بَرَرَةٍ

Transliteration: Kiramin bararatin

Noble and dutiful

قُتِلَ ٱلْإِنسَـٰنُ مَآ أَكْفَرَهُۥ

Transliteration: Qutila alinsanu ma akfarahu

Cursed is man; how disbelieving is he

مِنْ أَىِّ شَىْءٍ خَلَقَهُۥ

Transliteration: Min ayyi shayin khalaqahu

From what substance did He create him

مِن نُّطْفَةٍ خَلَقَهُۥ فَقَدَّرَهُۥ

Transliteration: Min nutfatin khalaqahu faqaddarahu

From a sperm-drop He created him and destined for him

ثُمَّ ٱلسَّبِيلَ يَسَّرَهُۥ

Transliteration: Thumma alssabeela yassarahu

Then He eased the way for him

ثُمَّ أَمَاتَهُۥ فَأَقْبَرَهُۥ

Transliteration: Thumma amatahu faaqbarahu

Then He causes his death and provides a grave for him

ثُمَّ إِذَا شَآءَ أَنشَرَهُۥ

Transliteration: Thumma itha shaa ansharahu

Then when He wills, He will resurrect him

كَلَّا لَمَّا يَقْضِ مَآ أَمَرَهُۥ

Transliteration: Kalla lamma yaqdi ma amarahu

No! Man has not yet accomplished what He commanded him

فَلْيَنظُرِ ٱلْإِنسَـٰنُ إِلَىٰ طَعَامِهِۦٓ

Transliteration: Falyanthuri alinsanu ila taAAamihi

Then let mankind look at his food

أَنَّا صَبَبْنَا ٱلْمَآءَ صَبًّا

Transliteration: Anna sababna almaa sabban

How We poured down water in torrents

ثُمَّ شَقَقْنَا ٱلْأَرْضَ شَقًّا

Transliteration: Thumma shaqaqna alarda shaqqan

Then We broke open the earth, splitting [it with sprouts]

فَأَنۢبَتْنَا فِيهَا حَبًّا

Transliteration: Faanbatna feeha habban

And caused to grow within it grain

وَعِنَبًا وَقَضْبًا

Transliteration: WaAAinaban waqadban

And grapes and herbage

وَزَيْتُونًا وَنَخْلًا

Transliteration: Wazaytoonan wanakhlan

And olive and palm trees

وَحَدَآئِقَ غُلْبًا

Transliteration: Wahadaiqa ghulban

And gardens of dense shrubbery

وَفَـٰكِهَةً وَأَبًّا

Transliteration: Wafakihatan waabban

And fruit and grass

مَّتَـٰعًا لَّكُمْ وَلِأَنْعَـٰمِكُمْ

Transliteration: MataAAan lakum walianAAamikum

[As] enjoyment for you and your grazing livestock

فَإِذَا جَآءَتِ ٱلصَّآخَّةُ

Transliteration: Faitha jaati alssakhkhatu

But when there comes the Deafening Blast

يَوْمَ يَفِرُّ ٱلْمَرْءُ مِنْ أَخِيهِ

Transliteration: Yawma yafirru almaro min akheehi

On the Day a man will flee from his brother

وَأُمِّهِۦ وَأَبِيهِ

Transliteration: Waommihi waabeehi

And his mother and his father

وَصَـٰحِبَتِهِۦ وَبَنِيهِ

Transliteration: Wasahibatihi wabaneehi

And his wife and his children

لِكُلِّ ٱمْرِئٍ مِّنْهُمْ يَوْمَئِذٍ شَأْنٌ يُغْنِيهِ

Transliteration: Likulli imriin minhum yawmaithin shanun yughneehi

For every man, that Day, will be a matter adequate for him

وُجُوهٌ يَوْمَئِذٍ مُّسْفِرَةٌ

Transliteration: Wujoohun yawmaithin musfiratun

[Some] faces, that Day, will be bright

ضَاحِكَةٌ مُّسْتَبْشِرَةٌ

Transliteration: Dahikatun mustabshiratun

Laughing, rejoicing at good news

وَوُجُوهٌ يَوْمَئِذٍ عَلَيْهَا غَبَرَةٌ

Transliteration: Wawujoohun yawmaithin AAalayha ghabaratun

And [other] faces, that Day, will have upon them dust

تَرْهَقُهَا قَتَرَةٌ

Transliteration: Tarhaquha qataratun

Blackness will cover them

أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ هُمُ ٱلْكَفَرَةُ ٱلْفَجَرَةُ

Transliteration: Olaika humu alkafaratu alfajaratu

Those are the disbelievers, the wicked ones
